Don't explain everything

"When you make a film, you have to satisfy the audience to a certain extend. But you always have to leave them with a little appetite for more. If they are stuffed with what you gave them, they forget about it immediately. It happens on two levels: In a case (like Chinatown) when you deal with solving a mystery of corruption, when you deal with evil, you have to call it a tragedy, and therefore you can't end it with happy ending. The other thing is you mustn't tell too much. You have to leave the audience with the feeling that they didn't understand everything. This type of films today try to explain absolutely everything. And there is nothing left really. Everythings seems already, done, told, boring in fact in the end."
